The quick definition of cardio is doing an activity in which you move the large muscles in your body (usually arms and legs) repeatedly, causing your CARDIOvascular system to work harder.

This is when your heart rate elevates and you find yourself breathing deeper and quicker to get oxygen round to the moving muscles via the blood.

Whilst you may feel out of breath and puffed out during your workout, the more you exercise, the more efficient the cardiovascular system becomes.

You will soon find that you are actually feeling more energised rather than exhausted. Rather than breaking out into a sweat as you trudge up a flight of stairs, you’ll one day realise you bounced up them without needing a rest at the top.

Cardio doesn’t have to be a full on spin class, or a crazy HIIT workout. A brisk walk, a swim or bike ride can still elevate the heart rate and have you breathing a bit deeper.

You should always go at your own pace, but don’t cheat yourself. If you can do it, DO IT!

Benefits of Cardio workouts:

  • Strengthens the heart so it doesn’t have to work as hard to do its job

  • Helps to manage/reduce/prevent high blood pressure, heart disease, high cholesterol and diabetes

  • Increases lung capacity so you do not tire as quickly / can perform day to day tasks without becoming breathless

  • Creates feel-good hormones and endorphins and can help with depression and anxiety

  • Burns calories and fat

  • Helps control appetite

  • Gives you self confidence in your appearance

  • You are setting a great example to your family

Cardio can be great fun. Because of the way I programme workouts, many of our sessions will give you a great cardiovascular workout, whether you have been coming to me for months and can bust out 15 burpees in 30 seconds, or if you are a beginner with me and are modifying to ease you back to fitness gradually.

If you've been thinking about kick starting your fitness routine for a while but haven't taken the plunge, or if you've tried to start a new healthy regime but have given up time and time again, give me a shout.
